Issues with Like-Dislike Voting in Web 2.0 and Social Media, and Various Defects in Social Ranking and Rating Systems - Confused and Vague Design and Measure - Psychology of the Crowds - Corrupted Society Preferences and Suggestions. In Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, TV Networks...
The paper explores the complexities and shortcomings of like-dislike voting systems in Web 2.0 and social media, questioning what these simple metrics truly convey about user preferences and the subjective nature of "liking." These systems and the effect of the psychology of the crowd, the selective and incomplete set of voters - not everybody votes and the votes are driven by different motives, - the controlled and biased suggestions for future clicks by the social web platforms etc. oversimplify, confuse and misdirect the meaning of that measure and its supposed reflection of some abstract scalar genuine quality and public interest in the particular publications or other pieces of media content.
