Firefox and the Last Starfighter

No, it's not about the browser... :)

"Firefox" is a 1982 movie by Clint Eastwood, where he is the director and the star.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083943/

Clint is an american pilot who steals an advanced Soviet aircraft, which is controlled by thought.
The pilot must think in Russian, or he will be caught...

I've seen it maybe about 15 years ago, but I clearly remember this point of thought-control, remember that the aircraft was sexy and that the special FX looked fine to me... Cool movie!

Do you also remember "The Last Starfighter" ?

A 1984 movie with stunning 3D-graphics for the time, rendered by Cray-2, as they say. A boy wins an arcade game and an alien come to recruit him for a star fighter... :)

It's a very nice SciFi movie, too.

...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083943/

The Last Starfighter" ?

BRUTUS.1 the storytelling machine - preview of my review

BRUTUS is a literary creativity computational architecture, developed by S. Bringsjord and D. Ferrucci. The architecture is even patented. BRUTUS.1 is its implementation.

In brief, I researched about the system and was disappointed to see that actually it is very far from creativity, at least in my view. The book about Brutus fall into endless discussion about first-order logic and questions about "what is betrayal", defined in first-order logic... The example of story generation about betrayal, the promoted expertise of Brutus.1, is one mere story in few variations, and it relies on hand-crafted clauses in Prolog (precisely - Flex).

The authors themselves state that the system does not originate this single story. I think they do not believe in computational creativity, they rely too much on first-order logic and do not believe in evolutionary computational creativity.

There will be a discussion on the approach of BRUTUS.1 in my upcoming review.

Meanwhile I'm also researching MEXICA: A Computer Model of
Creativity in Writing, as defined in the PhD of Rafael Pérez. At first sight it seems more promising.

| Why there are flags on the corners of the soccer fields?

Why there are flags on the corners of the soccer fields?

I was watching football when the ball was about to go between the corner and the touch lines when I realized what is the real function of the flags on the corners...

Imagine what would happen if there were not flags and the ball passes exactly through the corner. Half a touch, half a corner... The stick prevents this situations and the ball could either return back to the field, because the situation is indecisive, or go to precisely one direction.

Big Dog The Robot

I was very impressed seeing Big Dog robot two years ago.
Now a new amazing video has appeared. :) It's so cute, like a real doggy... :-D Or more likely a hybrid between a bee, a dog and two men carrying a table. :)

The old video

Good job, Boston Dynamics!

And don't miss to see this cool Beta version of the robot:

Glas 2004 - Bulgarian Text To Speech Synthesizer

Glas 2004 is а formant Bulgarian Text To Speech Synthesizer, created by Todor Arnaudov in 2004.
Projects for future versions Glas 2 and Glas 3 are mentioned.

Twenkid Research - Todor Arnaudov's Researches

* Специални възможности:

- интонация;

What is better for a multi-effects guitar processor's display - numbers or names?

Actually it's a more general question about Human-Computer Interaction, where user is able to browse sequential options with only two buttons (up-down) and there are two indications of current state. One is a display, and the other is for example different sound (or a timbre) for different states. However, user can recognize the state by the sound, but of course this is much slower than visual recognition.

The discussion is what is more convenient indication (faster to operate with):

1. Index of the position in the list, i.e. two or three digit numbers
2. Name of the item on the position

At first sight when a customer is looking for a multi-effects pedal, he or she could be attracted by the wider displays of some of the pedals, which indicate names of the effects, but is it really more useful?

While I've been playing with a pedal with name indication for a while, it was surprisingly for me to realize, that numbers seem to be better in particular cases...

With a guitar multieffect processor, with name indication you've got a list of names:

PLXDRV
CLNCHK
RECTFD
PLEXDR
BLUDRV
BIGBLU
SOLDLX
BIGBLU
BSSDRV
...
SOLDLY
WHAMMY

And you see just one active at a time.

Imagine the list is 60 items long, and you need to switch between items which are on a 30-step distance and you don't know the exact distance.

You know the name of the target and you can recognize its tone, but usually you wouldn't remember how many times you should click on the pedal to get there. Probably you'll remember the names which are immediately around the target (due to the attention focus when you search for it and find it). However, generally you'll know just if they are "far" or "close", not exact numbers, and after all names suggest you not to count on numbers.

Unless you remember the whole list in-between - i.e. all names and their order - and unless you can imagine the distances between effects, you'll have to click the buttons or push the pedals slowly and you should be watching the indication.

On the other hand, if the indication is just two-digit number, you can easily remember both numbers and quickly pass through the others, without watching the steps in between...

...

Of course, number indication has it faults, too. First of all, they are less fancy... And they don't help you to create a named link between the sound and the effect (or say the state of the system). For example, it's good for a young player to know, that this sound is for Solo, this is usually Blues etc. (Even though he or she can recognize it by ear, but what ever... )

Also, names are useful for editing effects using software tools, for example Digitech RP150, RP250 and RP350 come with XEdit.

Conclusion

For education purposes, using name indication is better.

If you need to switch very quickly between given positions, without the burden of learning a new alphabet - go for numbers... ;-)

Suggestion

Don't be tricked to choose a pedal for its wider display! Choose it for its tone.

How erotics is born? Why woman's bottom looks attractive and erotic to man?

How do we recognize that something is sexy?
Why do we get aroused by thinking of naked women?
Why we find some things and somebodies sexy, and others - not?
How do we learn to recognize sexy things?

How men learn to get excited about seeing naked women?
How do we learn that this images should make us horny?

How do we, heterosexual, get attracted to girls and not to boys for intimacy and sexual activities?

Questions, questions...

It's easy to answer: "it's genetically encoded", "men recognize women with high probability for fertilization", blah-blah-blah...

Some researches suggest that brain is prewired to see the images of specific bottoms, breastes, thin waist etc. as "hot", without being teached.

I agree that many aspects of beaty in general probably are "prewired" in brain's design. However, I can't get no satisfaction from such explanation - I need something more specific, so I've been searching for something that could be captured from the environment and used to configure the brain, without having specific "Ass-recognizing hardware" built-in.

Some time ago, I had a hypothesis about this software way for configuration:

Ass curves visually resemble man's penis, seen from above. Thus the way boy and young man's brain is configured to see this images as erotic could be the following - whenever he sees his errected penis and this image, he's horny... Thus, this image is learned to be an indication of horniness... :)

It's also true that while seeing a naked woman, a speculation about sex could be made, even if the boy still doesn't have explicit knowledge about what really sex is. Even young boys know, that there are two types of people, which are different; they marry and there is some kind of secret about how they were born. Even little boys also know, that certain parts of women body should be hidden, and when thay see nudity there, they could suppose this is an indication of something specail, unusual. If the boy has a vague idea of sex, but knows that it is something special between man and woman, he could guess that nudity is connected.

TexAI - an open-source knowledge-based software project to create artificial intelligence

TexAI at SourceForge

Texai is an chatbot that intelligently seeks to acquire knowledge and friendly behaviors. Important components include the RDF Entity Manager, the Texai Lexicon, and Incremental Fluid Construction Grammar. The blog url is http:/texai.org/blog.

The projects aims, stated by Steve Reed on their webpage sound pretty cool... He is brave and confident almostlike when I talk about my projects!

The system is supposed to learn by itself, to learn to code in Java and to self-program and self-enhance!

...

Great!

BTW, I've been thinking about system, which learn how to do programming, too. It will boost the speed of coding big part of which is slow typing or browsing code. This tools will free for us more time for cretivity...

I believe a thinking machine, which is capable to learn to think like a programmer, shouldn't be hard to design.

-Believer... Stop talking... Do it!

Just a second. Let's think rationally... Programming is not really a creative task, if you know what you want to accomplish. The language is formal, the way of searching the solution via debugging, code reviews, manuals or search engines is also formal or seems to be easy for formalization.

"I want to do a cycle", "I want to have a hash table and access it", "I want to create a window with so and so menus"... If a system knows what it want, it would be able to program as fast as a lightning. This is one of my projects, too.

Perhaps creativity actually is also not really creativy, if we know the prerequisites for it to happen, but that's another story.

...

Back to TexAI - very good links on the site and interesting tools in their sourceforge repository.

I'll stay tuned!

* Their approach reminds me several of my planned for not-so-far future projects. Conversational Agent and Automatic Programming. I have to post the list with Research Directions and Goals I composed few months ago for an amendment of my contract for working as a verification engineer, "an enhanced" version of the list in some of the first posts in this blog.

** BTW, a very important research direction for the success of the researches are Resarch Accelerators... More on this - next time.
